| The senior staff has a broad range of associations
in the non-profit world, as both grantors and grantees. Charles R. Halpern,
the Foundation's president, is a pioneer of the public interest law
movement and the founding dean of the City University of New York Law
School. Andrea Kydd, who heads the Foundation's health program, was
director of the Youth Project in Washington, DC, and a senior executive
at VISTA. She is a board member of Grantmakers in Health. The director
of the Jewish life program, Rachel Cowan, is an ordained rabbi, an innovator
in Jewish institutions, the co-author of Mixed Blessings, a book
on intermarriage, and a board member of the Jewish Funders Network.
The director of special projects, Jennifer H. McCarthy, managed training
programs for black South African community leaders and directed the
office of program development at the Institute of International Education.
New staff who joined in early 1995 are Henry Tzu Ng, Claudine K.
Brown, and Richard F. Mark. Henry Ng, vice president of the Foundation,
was director of the J.M. Kaplan Fund, vice president of the American
Academy in Rome, and deputy director of the Municipal Art Society
in New York. He has an MBA degree from the University of Chicago.
Claudine Brown, director of the arts program, served the Smithsonian
Institution as deputy assistant provost for the arts and humanities
and the Brooklyn Museum as assistant director for government and community
relations. She has graduate degrees in museum education and law. Richard
Mark, director of the environment program, has worked with the Energy
Foundation on transportation issues and held leadership positions
with the Union of Concerned Scientists, Common Cause, and the Professionals'
Coalition for Nuclear Arms Control. He holds master's degrees in social
work and divinity.
During 1994, the period of this report, Ellen Lazarus was chief
financial officer, Conn Nugent director of the environment program,
and Joan Shigekawa director of the arts program. Out thanks go to
Ellen, Conn, and Joan, as well as three assistants, Janis Astor del
Valle, Courtney Helgoe, and Anita P. Bermiss, who also left during
the past year, for their contributions to the work of the Foundation,
and for their good company.
